Moving to AlmaLinux
Feb 25, 2026
The last few days I’ve been working on moving my server from Ubuntu to AlmaLinux. I’ve been using Ubuntu for a few years now, and I’ve been pretty happy with it, but I’ve been wanting to move to something more stable and long-term. AlmaLinux is a great choice for this, as it’s a community-driven, enterprise-grade Linux distribution that’s based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It’s, of course, free and open-source.
Ubuntu is fine, but I’ve never enjoyed the corporate aspect of it. I don’t really enjoy that Alma is based on RHEL, but it’s a much better alternative to CentOS, which is no longer community-driven. At least AlmaLinux is community-driven and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. Along with others like Rocky and, uh….I’m sure there are others.

Looks like Swift runs on AlmaLinux just fine. At least Rookery does. Cockpit works great, obviously. I have a weird issue with my ISP that doesn’t allow to remote in easily, but I can use cockpit to manage my home network when I’m away.
